Free key signature quiz and practice

Read and write major and minor key signatures. Free key signature quiz for band and orchestra theory — HYKOM on practice cents.

Why key signatures stick (or don’t)

Key signatures show how many sharps or flats (and which ones) for a major key and its relative minor. Guessing from the last accidental fails when the staff is empty — learn the order of sharps and flats cold.

Practice both naming a signature and writing one for a given key. That helps later with transposition and scale writing.

Practice tips

Say the order of sharps (F C G D A E B) and flats (B E A D G C F) out loud. Drill relative minors: same signature, different tonic. Then switch to write mode so your hand matches your eye.

  • Flash major first, then relative minor
  • Build signatures, don’t only multiple-choice them
  • Connect to scales you play in band
  • Review with Today’s mix when keys go cold

On practice cents

HYKOM key-signature drills are free for grades 6–12. Write mode puts the signature on the staff, not only as a text answer.
